Ener-G-Africa to champion Improved Cookstoves in Ghana


Groundbreaking AfricaEnergyParks Project
Ener-G-Africa is proud to be one of the 11 dedicated partners of the newly launched AfricaEnergyParks (AEP) four-year research project in Ghana, which is funded by the European Commission.
The project’s objective is to establish a Renewable Energy Park (REEP) in partnership with the Jang community on the fringes of Mole National Park. Through this project, Ener-G-Africa, with its partners will demonstrate improved energy access and climate resilience through the innovative water-energy-food-ecosystem (WEFE) nexus approach.
Drawing inspiration from the successful Horizon project “RePower,” the project aims to replicate a user-friendly microgrid powered by solar photovoltaics (PV), a battery energy storage system (BESS), and biomass combined heat and power (BCHP) technologies.
Additionally, to boost energy demand within the community, the project will introduce technologies and initiatives for the productive use of energy (PUE) while embracing a circular economy model. This approach involves repurposing agricultural and food processing waste as a valuable resource for the BCHP plant, promoting sustainability and resource efficiency.
The project is working towards:
- Harnessing solar energy and converting agricultural waste into sustainable energy
- Introducing clean cookstoves to promote healthier cooking practices
- Safeguarding wildlife and combating deforestation
- Developing a scalable model for other regions, incorporating circular economy approaches such as small business development
Ener-G-Africa is one of the leading cookstove manufacturers in Africa, having opened a 3 200m2 clean cooking manufacturing plant in the Western Cape, South Africa to promote safe and clean cooking solutions. Because of this, Ener-G-Africa has been entrusted with overseeing all activities pertaining to the Improved Cookstoves (ICS) segment of the project. This includes researching the cooking needs of the communities, choosing an applicable cookstove design, manufacturing and distributing the cookstoves to the members of the Jang community.
Upon successful completion of this project, the aim is to expand this model approach across Africa. Ener-G-Africa is confident that this project will play a pivotal role in demonstrating improved energy access and climate resilience and serve as a stepping stone for broader implementation throughout the continent.
